The answer box just got a billboard.

OpenAI began selling sponsored placements in ChatGPT in the US in February 2026. In September, Amazon partnered with OpenAI so select US advertisers can run ChatGPT ads through Amazon's advertising platform. The ads are text and image units beneath ChatGPT's responses, labelled as sponsored. Amazon sets up and manages the campaigns. OpenAI controls which ads get delivered.

That pairing will shape the next few years of advertising.

The place people go to ask "which one should I buy" now has a paid slot under the answer. And the company helping to sell that slot says it targets with "trillions of proprietary browsing, shopping, and streaming signals".

So should you be moving budget?

Not yet. Move time first. Put it into getting named in the answer itself and into cleaning up your product data. Those two jobs decide whether a ChatGPT ad would ever pay off for you, and they pay off today whether you buy one or not.

What is on offer right now

Strip the headlines away and this is what exists.

The Amazon pilot is limited to select advertisers, and it is US only for now. It runs as a managed service through Amazon's demand-side platform, so there is no dashboard to log in to yourself. Separately, OpenAI opened ChatGPT ad buying in Australia in May 2026, through partners or a beta self serve Ads Manager with cost per click bidding. Local businesses can already buy in.

Wherever you buy, the placement sits beneath the answer. That detail matters more than all the others.

The response comes first and the ad comes second. So your ad competes with whatever the model just said, in the one place the buyer has already been handed a recommendation.

If the answer names your competitor, your ad underneath it has to work as a rebuttal, and rebuttals are expensive.

Paid placement in an answer engine is worth the most to the businesses who need it least: those already named in the answer above.

Why this is more than another ad channel

Every new placement gets pitched as the next big thing, and most turn out to be ordinary. Two features set this one apart.

The intent is unusually explicit. A buying question in ChatGPT arrives typed out in full sentences with the constraints attached. Budget, location, what they tried before. A keyword tells you far less, and a scroll past your post tells you almost nothing.

The trust is borrowed. An ad under a search result is read as an ad. An ad under an answer from an assistant that just spent several paragraphs helping you inherits some of that goodwill, at least until users learn to skim past it. My bet is that the window closes the way it did for every ad format before this one.

Both point the same direction. As access widens, advertisers with clean product data and a clear offer will get more out of every dollar than those who show up with recycled search ads.

How an answer engine ad differs from a search ad

It is tempting to treat this as Google Ads with a new logo. The mechanics differ enough that the same playbook will underperform.

  • The buyer has already read a recommendation. On a search results page, the ad often appears before the organic listings. Here it appears after the assistant has given its view, and it gets read in the light of that answer.
  • The question is long. A search might be three words. A prompt can be three sentences with a budget and a suburb in it. An ad that speaks to a specific situation fits that context better than a generic brand line.
  • The comparison is instant. The person can ask a follow up question about your offer straight away. "Is that one any good?" If your reviews and pricing are thin, the assistant may say so.
  • The click is only one outcome. Someone might see your name in an ad, ask the assistant about you, then search your brand a week later. Last click reporting will undercount that path, so plan to watch branded search alongside ad clicks.

The practical upshot: an ad can amplify a strong position. It cannot carry a weak one.

If you are not in the Amazon pilot

That is most businesses, including most people reading this. Even with a self serve option open, holding back is the better position, because you get to prepare while everyone else argues about costs per click.

There are two jobs. Neither needs a media budget.

Job one. Be the answer organically.

The ad sits under the response, and the response is free. It also cannot be bought. OpenAI's stated position is that "ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers". So put more effort into appearing in the answer than into planning to buy space beneath it.

That means pages that state plainly what you sell, who it is for, where you operate and how pricing works. Make them specific enough to quote, and keep them current. A slogan and a stock photo will not do it.

It means consistency everywhere a model might look. Your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, marketplaces and reviews should all describe the same business in the same terms. Contradictions make you harder to recommend.

If you have never checked what the assistants currently say, start there. We wrote a guide to finding out what AI tells your customers about you, and another on why the answer itself is now your shopfront.

Job two. Get your product data clean.

The Amazon pilot shows what the inputs are. Alongside the standard units, Amazon is offering product feed ads that build the creative automatically from your catalogue. So the catalogue is the ad. A title missing the size, or a price that is out of date, goes straight into what the shopper sees.

If your catalogue lives in a spreadsheet nobody has touched since launch, fix it now. Clean product data already pays off in shopping ads and on marketplaces, whether or not you ever buy a ChatGPT placement.

Service businesses are not exempt. Your "catalogue" is your list of services, packages, starting prices, service areas and turnaround times. Write them down as clearly as a product feed would, on real pages a machine can read.

What to do with your budget this quarter

  • Do not reserve big money for it yet. You can buy in through OpenAI's beta Ads Manager. But until you are named in the answer and your data is clean, an ad underneath works as a rebuttal.
  • Do move time. A few hours a month on answer visibility and product data keeps paying no matter which ad formats open next.
  • Ask ChatGPT about your category. Type the questions your customers ask. Write down who gets named and why, and whether you appear. That is your baseline.
  • Tighten the offer. An assistant compares propositions on things like price and guarantee. If yours is vague, no placement will rescue it.
  • Watch the results and ignore the hype. When you do test, use a small, fixed budget against a clear goal before committing real money.
Get your business ready for AI search

How to test it when you are ready

Treat the first campaign as an experiment with a defined end. It is not a new line item yet.

  1. Write down the goal before you spend. A cost per sale or cost per qualified lead you would be happy with, based on what your other channels already achieve.
  2. Set a fixed test budget and a fixed window. Enough to get a meaningful number of clicks, small enough that losing it would not hurt. Put an end date in the calendar.
  3. Check your organic position first. Run your buyer questions through ChatGPT and note whether you are already named. The answer above your ad will change how the ad performs.
  4. Send clicks to a page that matches the question. Skip the homepage. Use a page that answers the exact situation the prompt described.
  5. Track the full path. Conversions, plus branded search and direct enquiries over the same window.
  6. Compare against your best existing channel. Only scale if the cost holds up next to the channel you would otherwise put that money into.

A hypothetical shows how that plays out. Say you sell outdoor furniture online in the US and get access. You set aside a small, fixed test budget for four weeks, with a target cost per sale matched to your Google Shopping results. Before launching, you ask ChatGPT for "durable outdoor dining sets under $2,000 for a coastal climate" and find a competitor named in the answer where you hoped to be. Your ad will be working as a rebuttal, so you point it at a page proving salt air resistance and warranty terms. After four weeks you compare cost per sale with Shopping and decide on the evidence.

The mistake to avoid

The trap is treating this as a buying decision when it is a readiness decision.

In our view, buying first was never what won search ads. The winners had the clearest offer and the tightest tracking when the auction got crowded.

We expect answer engine ads to follow the same pattern, only more brutally. The organic answer sits right on top of the paid one, and the buyer sees the gap between them at a glance.

That is why the offer still beats the algorithm. Platform changes tend to reward the business with the clearest reason to buy, and this one should too. If you want help getting your offer and product data ready before you spend a dollar on this, that is the work our advertising team does every day.

So open ChatGPT today and ask it the question your best customer would ask. If your name is missing from the answer, you have found this month's marketing priority, and it does not need a cent of media budget to start.

Frequently asked questions

Can Australian businesses advertise on ChatGPT yet?

Yes. Since May 2026 Australian businesses can buy ChatGPT ads through partners or OpenAI's beta self serve Ads Manager. The Amazon program described here is a separate pilot for select US advertisers. Either way, the useful first move is preparing: getting named in ChatGPT's organic answers and cleaning up your product or service data, so any ad you run has something strong to point at.

Where do ads appear in ChatGPT?

The ads are text or image units that sit beneath ChatGPT's response, labelled as sponsored. They are not part of the answer itself. A person reads the assistant's recommendation first and sees the ad second. If the answer already names a competitor, your ad has to work as a rebuttal, which is harder than being named in the answer.

Should I move my Google Ads budget to ChatGPT ads?

Not wholesale. Keep funding channels that are proven for you. If you want to try ChatGPT ads, run a small, fixed test with a clear cost per result target and only shift money if it beats your best existing channel.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT answers for free?

Publish clear pages stating what you sell, who it is for, where you operate and how pricing works. Keep your details consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and reviews. Then ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, note who gets named, and close the gaps between their information and yours.
